iLED – tried and tested in Berlin

The German army medical Hospital in Berlin thoroughly tested the iLED, finding it to be suitable for most purposes.

“I expect a lamp to illuminate evenly, generate few shadows – even deep down in the cavity – and its brightness to be adjustable for various uses.” That’s how Dr Wolfgang Düsel describes his expectations for a good OR lamp. The new iLED from TRUMPF has been in use at the army hospital since the beginning of the year and has obviously met these requirements keenly. “In fact, during abdominal procedures, the iLED illuminates the base of the wound evenly and deeply. For endoscopic procedures, the lamp can also be easily dimmed. If obstacles such as the surgeon’s head block the light beam, you can also configure the light in such a way that almost no shadows are generated,” explains the chief of surgery. “Compared to previous lamps, this is an entirely new light

quality – with a brightness and illumination that I have not experienced before.”

Since 1999, the clinic has been using another TRUMPF product – its ceiling pendant – in five of its ORs. Five lamp systems – the iLED 5 combined with the smaller iLED 3 and a monitor arm – are now also rendering their services for cardiovascular and emergency surgery, orthopaedics, ear, nose and throat; and urology.

As soon as the hospital’s new building is finished, three more LED lamp systems will be installed – and if Dr Düsel has his way, these will include the camera solution. The question that remains to be answered is how the new and unique lamp function of the iLED – the adjustable colour temperature – tested in the army hospital (see also article, page 1), will work. “In endoscopic procedures, we selected a warm light temperature in order to prevent blending,” reports Dr Düsel. “But I believe that once we learn more about the functions and infl uences of the adjustable colour temperature, we could use it even more efficiently.”
